A tribal fight over a woman in the Papua New Guinea highlands has left 16 people dead and a dozen houses destroyed.
PNG highlanders have been fighting over land and women for years and this particular trouble started when a woman left her partner and returned to live with her first husband.
The deserted lover reacted by killing a woman's husband's relative, which sparked number of revenge attacks, Enga Police Commander Michael Chare says.
"The killings were done by high powered firearms," he said.
"Both clans were using high-powered firearms.
"They just go in, sit in the bush, kill people then they sneak off again".
The police commander has appealed for calm ahead of a government meeting to be held in the province next month.
