30 feared dead in Indian temple stampede

At least 30 people are feared dead after a stampede at a Hindu temple in the western Indian state of Rajasthan, local television reported.

The stampede occurred at the Chamunda temple near the historic town of Jodhpur.

Last month, a stampede outside a mountain top Hindu temple in northern India killed at least 145 pilgrims.

Authorities ordered an investigation into that disaster, which occurred after rumours of a landslide triggered panic among pilgrims who ran down a narrow mountain trail from the Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh state, only to meet thousands of people walking up.

In January 2005, at least 265 Hindu pilgrims, including several women and children, were killed near a remote temple in India's Maharashtra state.

Taxi between Rocks and a hard place

Police today issued a warning after a five kilogram metal grate was dropped from a bridge onto a taxi as it dropped off passengers in The Rocks in Sydney.

The incident, which took place on Sunday night, followed a similar incident on Saturday night.

Police, who have analysed CCTV footage of one incident, say someone could be killed in such attacks.

Both incidents took place at Hickson Road.

A 60cm by 40cm grate was thrown at a taxi from an overhead bridge as it dropped off passengers at 9.30pm (AEST) on Sunday.

The cab's bonnet was damaged, but no one was injured.

A heavy object was also dropped on a car the previous night, smashing its windscreen.

"We plan to consult members of the local community and highlight the dire consequences relating to such behaviour," Detective Inspector Murray Reynolds said in a statement today.

"In addition, they may be able to shed some light as to who was behind the incidents."

Woman tied to track, cut in half by train

A 27-YEAR-OLD woman has been cut in two after being tied to a railway track in southern Thailand.

The body of Niparat Tawornporn was found yesterday near Ban Na Doem village in Surat Thani province, 525km south of Bangkok, after it had been sliced in two.

Ban Na Noem Police Colonel Narongyot Unhabandit said Niparat's wrists had been tied with her pink shirt, and her body left across one of the rail tracks.

As numerous bruises were found on her body, police speculated that Niparat had been badly beaten before being left on the tracks.

Narongyot said police suspected the murder was the result of a love affair, noting that Niparat had divorced her husband last year and had many suitors.

Relatives said Niparat had left her house Saturday evening on her motorcycle, which was found near her body.

Saturday night thiever says sorry to victims

A thief in Germany, plagued by guilt after robbing a kiosk, went back days later to deliver a note of apology and pay compensation to the victims.

Police said the business in Kamen, near the western town of Unna, was broken into on Saturday night and looted of cigarettes and alcohol, suffering looses of about 4,300 euros.

Arriving for work on Thursday, staff were surprised to find an envelope stuffed with 400 euros ($590) and a note which read "sorry -- to make up for Saturday night!."
