NT police hit back at 'arrogant' Abbott

The Northern Territory Police Association has blasted the Federal Opposition's Indigenous spokesman Tony Abbott for his comments about the Territory police force.

In Parliamentary sittings this week Mr Abbott said NT officers had failed to keep booze and pornography out of remote Aboriginal communities.

Mr Abbott also spoke out against the Government's plans to reintroduce the permit system for Aboriginal land, with the exception of health workers and journalists.

Vince Kelly from the Northern Territory Police Association says the remarks are ignorant and arrogant.

"Well I guess any police officer who was watching the ABC news and saw that grab would be absolutely astounded as to the level of arrogance that Mr Abbott displayed in just simply dismissing the great work that police officers do in all these communities," he said.

"The fact of the matter is, and Mr Abbott should know this, that our members have been struggling with under-resourcing for over 30 years."
