'Abortion on demand' protesters rally in Melbourne

Anti-abortion campaigners have been rallying in central Melbourne to protest against proposed legislation to decriminalise abortion.

The Victorian Government will debate the bill in Parliament next week.

The bill allows unrestricted abortions in the first 24 weeks of pregnancy, but termination would have to be approved by two doctors after 24 weeks.

Abortions are illegal at present unless a woman can show she is at risk of harm by continuing with a pregnancy.

The protesters claim the proposed legislation amounts to abortion on demand.
