Popular songs in, hymns out for funerals

Popular songs are replacing hymns as the choice for many funeral services.

The Centennial Park Cemetery Authority in Adelaide says the most popular choice is Frank Sinatra's rendition of My Way, and next most popular is Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong.

Wind Beneath My Wings by Bette Midler and Over the Rainbow by Judy Garland also feature high on the list.

Bryan Elliot, at Centennial Park, says the choice of music is important to personalise a funeral.

"I think it's to do with the celebration of a life and the songs have a meaning for the people who are honouring the deceased or it has a particular meaning for the deceased themselves," he said.

For those sticking with hymns, the most popular choice is Amazing Grace.

There are also unusual choices of funeral songs - including The Show Must Go On by Queen, Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin, Highway to Hell by AC-DC and Another One Bites The Dust, also by Queen.
