Scalped' teen's thumb severed

A man has had his thumb severed and scalp slashed  in a knife attack in Sydney's west, police say.

The 18-year-old was attacked by a group of seven men armed with knives while standing outside shops on Station Road at Auburn shortly before 10.20pm (AEST) yesterday, police said.

The teenager was able to run away and called emergency services from nearby Macquarie Road.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital where he was this morning in a stable condition after undergoing surgery for a severed thumb, the palm of his hand and scalp.

He is reported to be in a stable condition and due to undergo plastic surgeon.

The men involved in the attack were still being sought, and police have yet to establish a motive for the attack.
