100 million-yr-old fish fossil found in outback Qld

A remarkably intact fossil of a fish thought to be more than 100 million-years-old has been found near Richmond in north-west Queensland.

The curator of the local Kronosaurus Korner, Paul Stumkat, says the fossil has been found in an area that used to be an inland sea.

He says you can still see the fossilised digestive system of the fish.

"What is most interesting about this animal is that we can tell what type of fish it is, not only by the teeth, which indicates what type of food it would have eaten, but also the fin shape and its body shape," he said.

"In this case, it presents an animal that would have been a very fast swimmer - almost tuna like."
