Bryce sworn in as G-G

Quentin Bryce has been officially sworn in as Australia's first female Governor-General.

"Australians, you have entrusted a great deal to me, I will honour your trust," Ms Bryce said in her speech after the ceremony at Parliament House in Canberra this morning.

The 65-year-old Ms Bryce becomes Australia's 25th Governor-General and replaces Major-General Michael Jeffery.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, federal politicians, senior judiciary members and diplomats were in the Senate chamber to watch Ms Bryce take her oath of office.

The ceremony was followed by a 21-gun salute.

Ms Bryce is a former Queensland governor, distinguished lawyer and former national sex discrimination commissioner.

Mr Rudd has previously named Ms Bryce's strong commitment to the bush and Indigenous Australians as key reasons for her selection.
