A Sydney man has been charged with grooming a child for sex after allegedly having explicit online conversations with a West Australian police officer, who was posing as a 12-year-old girl.
The officer is an investigator with WA Police's Cyber Predator Team and passed the information on to the NSW Police.
Detectives from the NSW Child Exploitation Internet Unit arrested the 34-year-old at his home at Thornleigh, in Sydney's north, yesterday morning.
They also seized computer equipment and other items from the house.
The man was taken to Hornsby Police Station for questioning before being charged.
He was released on bail to appear in Hornsby Local Court later this month.
In a statement, Detective Superintendent John Kerlatec said the arrest served as a warning to others.
"You can't hide behind the anonymity of the internet," he said.
"We work closely with our counterparts around Australia and overseas, and have the technology and skills to covertly monitor your usage of the computer."
